DCF Ecuador Team Meeting

Introductions

Dr. Bill

  • – Thank you’s to all the behind the scenes workers

Joe Ray

  • – Speaking for Russ Bennett about what he will be talking about on the trip
  • – We will be in the book of Micah
  • – Micah was a minor prophet (most well-known for the prophecy of Christ being born in Bethlehem)
  • – Ask Russ and Joe any questions or concerns that you may during the trip

Rules for the trip

  • – Be on time!
  • – Drink lots of water! (due to the high altitude)
  • – Have a positive attitude!
  • – Respectful and grateful to the Ecuadorians who are serving us while we’re there
    • o It is not an “us” and “them” relationship
  • – Be intentional about building relationships
  • – Don’t be glued to your phone; be present
  • – Be smart; not too much canoodling with relationships
  • – No alcohol in Quito
  • – Modest clothing (especially for the spa; one piece for the ladies and swimming trunks for the men {no speedos})

Most important ingredients for success of the trip:

  • – Flexibility
  • – Sense of humor

Packing

  • – Please pack in a carry-on bag, we will need you to check a dental bag
  • – This is not difficult
  • – Be conservative with clothing
    • Shorts close to knees for females
  • – Make sure toiletries can go in your carry-on
    • If you have something that you need to bring that is too large for a carry-on, bring it to the DCF warehouse labelled and we will have a bag prepared for that purpose
  • – DCF will provide sunscreen for the spa day
  • – Please wear a watch – especially if you are a helper with sterilization
  • – When we give you a bag, it will have a list of what’s inside, in case you get asked
    • We will set up a time for you to come pick up bags

Katie Koon

  • – Shirts and name tags are here for everyone
  • – On the back of the name tag is all the emergency contacts, if needed during travel
  • – PLEASE BRING THE NAME TAGS WITH YOU ON THE TRIP!
  • – We also have bag tags for your personal bags
  • – Those who are coming in late on Saturday night, bring a small flashlight with you
  • – We are creating a composite with the pictures of everyone on the trip, if you have not sent that to Katie Koon please do so (dentalcommunityfellowship@gmail.com)
  • – There are bio’s on the DCF website to get to know everyone who is going on the trip; if you have not sent one to Katie Koon, please do so (dentalcommunityfellowship@gmail.com)
  • – We give the people who serve us a tip for all the work they do for us while we’re there; you can pay ahead of time by giving that to Katie Koon, we suggest $30
  • – If you would like a massage for the spa day, please let Katie Koon know; this will be a $40 cost

Whitney Simons

  • – MUSC students
  • – Please read the email from Whitney Simons about the paperwork that needs to be done

Travel

  • – We know that people are coming and going at different times
  • – We have the getting there taken care of
  • – We’ll worry about the getting back when we’re there
  • IF ANYTHING CHANGES WITH YOUR FLIGHT LET SOMEONE KNOW
    • o Text Susalee or Dr. Bill (PUT THEIR NUMBERS IN YOUR PHONE)
    • o Call Tammy (who is on the back of your name tag)

GET A GOOD HEADLIGHT

  • – Bring plenty of batteries
  • – Bring your charger if you have a loupes light
  • – Bring your loupes too – this is just like clinic just without an overhead light

DON’T WANDER OFF BY YOURSELF

Due to the high altititude, we will not have to worry about mosquitos and the Zika virus. Mosquitos do not live above 5,000 feet and we will be above 9,000 ft the whole time so that’s good
